New York Times Archived Articles and TimesMachine

TimesMachine is a browser-based digital replica of all issues of The New York Times from 1851-2002, and is only available to Home Delivery, All Access, and News subscribers.

To access TimesMachine, visit timesmachine.nytimes.com/browser. You can also navigate here from the sections menu (the three horizontal lines in the top left corner) at any time.

With TimesMachine, subscribers can:

• Browse scanned issues of The New York Times
• Download up to 100 PDF’s per month
• Share an issue or page

Searching Best Practices

For best results, we recommend following these tips:

• Select the magnifying glass icon in the top right corner to start your search. Use any name, topic, or keyword to get started.
• Specify the date range by selecting Change Dates below the search bar.
• Sort results by Relevance in the top right corner (after you have completed your search).

Using the Index

When you select a specific article or are viewing the overview of a newspaper issue, an Index will appear with the Subjects (index terms), details of the article selected, and your sharing options.

When a specific article is selected within the past newspaper issue, the index will show:

Continue Reading: PDF or Full Print

Select the PDF link to open a PDF of the article. Home Delivery, All Access, and News Subscribers can download up to 100 article PDFs per month.

If the Full Print is available, selecting the link will open the article to read in full on www.nytimes.com.

Subjects

Suggested subjects may populate when an issue is open or a specific article is selected. These are indexing terms that will show all related articles within the issue.

Share

Home Delivery, All Access, and News Subscribers can share TimesMachine article links via email, social media, or by copying and pasting the permalink in the platform of your choosing (email, social media, text message, etc.). However, the recipient must also be either a Home Delivery, All Access, or News Subscriber in order to access the shared article.

Purchase a page reprint by selecting the Page Reprint link. This will take you to the New York Times Store where you can make purchases from the Newsstand section.
