I. Bước 1: Đọc hiểu “đề hỏi gì” thông qua keywords là cách viết mở bài Writing Task 2 đầu tiên

Để viết mở bài IELTS Writing Task 2 hiệu quả, bước đầu tiên thí sinh cần nằm lòng đó chính là đọc hiểu đề bài thông qua các keywords:

• Chúng ta cần nhanh chóng “đọc vị” thế cuối cùng là đề bài hỏi gì qua các key words.
• Dịch nhanh ra tiếng Việt là một cách khá tốt nếu bạn chưa quen trực tiếp tư duy bằng tiếng Anh.

Đề bài: “Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things that we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.”

➡ Đề bài hỏi quảng cáo khuyến khích chúng ta mua sản phẩm mà chúng ta không thực sự cần, hay quảng cáo mang lại thông tin về những sản phẩm tốt. Rõ ràng bạn phải discuss cả 2 hướng, rồi chọn gì thì tùy mỗi người.

Đề bài 2: “Studies show that criminals get a low level of education. Some people believe that the best way to reduce crime is educating people in prison so they can get a job after leaving prison. To what extent do you agree or disagree?”

➡ Đề bài hỏi cách tốt nhất để giảm tỷ lệ phạm tội có phải là đào tạo phạm nhân trong tù không? Nghe tới đây chắc nhiều người đã nghiêng về phía “không” rồi phải không nào?

Đề bài 3: “In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is therefore necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?”

➡ Phía trên bạn thấy 2 câu, một câu có trọng tâm là “health problems”, một câu trọng tâm là “impose tax”. Trong số này, nhiều người sẽ dễ nhầm câu 1 quan trọng hơn, rồi dành một đoạn dài để nói về “health problems" như obesity, diabetes v.v nhưng sau khi đọc kỹ, bạn sẽ hiểu đề bài thực chất hỏi rất đơn giản: “Đánh thuế hay không đánh thuế?". Lúc này lựa chọn là ở bạn thôi.

II. Bước 2: Giới thiệu nội dung bài qua general statement

• Ở bước này trong cách viết mở bài Writing Task 2 chúng ta viết câu giới thiệu bài (general statement) bằng cách paraphrase một số keywords chính trong đề bài.
• Bạn đừng cố gắng paraphrase toàn bộ, chỉ cần viết thế nào để người ta hiểu văn cảnh.
• Thi thoảng nếu đề bài phức tạp, bạn có thể viết mở bài Writing Task 2 bằng 2 câu thay vì một câu.

Chúng ta nhẹ nhàng paraphrase: Advertising ➡ commercial advertisementsKết quả chúng ta có: Recently, commercial advertisements have bombarded a variety of television channels, newspapers, magazines and websites.

Giới thiệu nội dung bài qua general statement: Studies show that criminals get a low level of education. Some people believe that the best way to reduce crime is educating people in prison so they can get a job after leaving prison. To what extent do you agree or disagree?Chúng ta có thể nhanh chóng paraphrase:Educating people in prison ➡ educating offenders during imprisonmentReduce crime ➡ reducing the future crime ratesKết quả bạn có thể viết: Educating offenders during imprisonment as a method of reducing the future crime rates is a major topic of concern in today's society.

Giới thiệu nội dung bài qua general statement: In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Ở đây chúng ta paraphrase:Increasing number of people...eating fast food increasing presence of fast food Governments ➡ policymakersImpose a higher tax ➡ taxation schemesKết quả bạn sẽ có: Recently, the increasing presence of fast food has caused many policymakers to consider specific taxation schemes that may fundamentally reduce the consumption of this type of food.

III. Bước 3: Trả lời đề bài vắn tắt bằng thesis statement

• Câu cuối trong cách viết mở bài Writing Task 2 là câu thesis statement, câu này sẽ dùng để trả lời đề bài và vẽ ra một bức tranh toàn cảnh: bài này sẽ được trả lời qua những phần chính nào?
• Để làm được điều này, chúng ta cần quay lại Bước 1: đề bài hỏi gì? Đề bài hỏi cả 2 vế, hay chỉ hỏi 1 vế thôi?
• Mục tiêu là trả lời thằng được đề bài và đưa ra được các hướng phát triển cho thân bài, do đó “phím” trước một số keywords bạn sẽ dùng trong thân bài là một cách tuyệt vời.
