Văn học Anh được xem là nền tảng của văn học thế giới, đặc biệt là từ thế kỷ 16 trở về sau. Trong danh sách 100 tiểu thuyết hay nhất mọi thế giới mà Bookaholic đã có dịp giới thiệu, hơn phân nửa số đó được việt từ các nhà văn Anh Quốc. Vậy nếu một danh sách chỉ toàn các tác phẩm từ Anh thì sẽ bao gồm những cái tên nào?

Trong một cuộc tìm kiếm từ các nhà văn, nhà phê bình và biên tập viên, BBC Văn hóa với sự đóng góp của Jane Ciabattari để lấy ý kiến 82 nhà phê bình cuốn sách, từ Úc đến Zimbabwe - nhưng không ai từ Vương quốc Anh. Danh sách chỉ chọn ra 100 tiểu thuyết, nên sẽ không hề xuất hiện bất kỳ tác phẩm nào thuộc thể loại phi hư cấu, kịch, tiểu sử, hồi ký hay thơ ca (nên sẽ không có “Paradise Lost” hay “Beowulf”), không có các tập truyện ngắn (nên sẽ không có Morte D’Arthur).

Cuốn tiểu thuyết Anh đã ảnh hưởng đến hình thức trên toàn thế giới trong nhiều thế kỷ, vì vậy BBC cảm thấy điều quan trọng là để có được một cái nhìn toàn cầu. Các nhà phê bình BBC thăm dò ý kiến trực tiếp và làm việc trên toàn thế giới, từ Mỹ và lục địa châu Âu, Australia, châu Phi, châu Á, Ấn Độ và Trung Đông.
