Thoughts on Persuasions 2022, 2007 and 1995

My Wife and I watched the 2022, 2007 and 1995 versions of Persuasion in the space of two days, here's a few thoughts about each:

1995: I'd never seen this one before. I really liked the attention to detail and the historical context this one managed to pack in, specifically the Naval scenes, and life in Bath and at Upper Cross. It almost felt like watching a documentary. I liked the development of Wentworth and Anne's relationship in this one, from distant and cold to sharing little moments together (which Root and Hinds portrayed wonderfully). In hindsight I can see why people who like this version say the ending of the 2007 version felt rushed, the ending here was unquestionably more satisfying. I liked the portrayal of the Musgrove family, displaying enjoyment of life and each other, as a contrast to the Elliot family and their pride and vanity.

2007: I have seen this one many times, and love it to pieces. I think Sally Hawkins does a great job of showing the emotional turmoil Anne goes through whilst still staying true to the long suffering, unassuming character. I love the general look and feel of this adaption, the cinematography is great. Some of the other performances I really enjoyed as well - Anthony Stewart Head was excellent as Sir Elliot, and I really liked Amanda Hale as Mary and Tobias Menzies as Mr Elliot. All the filming in Royal Crescent is lovely too, it's such a beautiful part of Bath.

2022: Visually I thouht it looked pretty good, although perhaps light on historical detail relatively. The soundtrack was nice, excepting the modern piece near the end which for me was totally out of place. Richard E Grant gave an excellent turn as Sir Elliot, and I liked Nia Towle as Louise Musgrove (they made her character a bit more defined and interesting than other adaptions I thought). Henry Golding was also great as Mr Elliot, although I honestly wish he had played Wentworth. I thought Dakota Johnson wasn't bad in it, she just was playing a character that was completely at odds with Anne Elliot and almost everything I love about the character.
